There is always a room for dessert. Who can ever resist any sweets after a heavy and sumptuous meal? Not me! Everyone has a sweet tooth somewhere even the most health conscious person. It’s just a matter of time when that sweet tooth will dig in and indulge in some sweetness. Speaking of sweetness, one dessert that is excellent to make because it is easy and quick to prepare is Panna Cotta. This Italian classic of a dessert is a silky smooth pudding made up of cream and sugar that is thickened with gelatin and then molded up. You can top it with your favorite fruits in season or you can aromatize it with vanilla, coffee or chocolate sauce.
This dessert came from Northern Italy which actually means cooked cream. Early recipe reveals that the cream was simmered with fishbone. This will allow collagen from the fishbone to set the cream. Imagine, having a fish for a dessert. Well, thanks to the invention of gelatin that we can now enjoy the smooth and velvety taste of Panna Cotta minus any fishy taste. Gelatin is widely used now for this dessert to achieve that melt in your mouth effect. You can either make a soft pudding by adding gelatin in milk and with some fruit puree or a rich, thick pudding using cream and gelatin. The challenge in making this dessert lies with consistency. It should be noted that this dessert should be in proper consistency with smooth and firm texture with a soft wobble to achieve that perfect dessert that everyone can enjoy.
Panna Cotta as a dessert can be versatile, and flexible. First of all, it is easy and quick to make. It is a no-bake dessert and the ingredients are easily available. So, if you want a quick dessert fix, you can easily whip out this dessert. Second, you can always adjust the amount of sugar you can put in it. You can make it low-sugar, no sugar or fruits only sugar and you can use alternative sugar also like stevia, honey or agave syrup. This is fitting for those that are conscious of their sugar intake. Third, it is dairy-free. It doesn’t have eggs in it so there won’t be any allergy restriction. What is also good about it is that you can use almond milk, coconut milk, and soy milk to make it dairy-free. Whatever adjustments you make in this dessert, it is still one of the most loved and most relished desserts that everybody will love.
